Naturopathic medicine offers a distinct approach to healthcare that differs from traditional MD (Medical Doctor) and DO (Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine) practices. While all three types of doctors undergo rigorous medical training, naturopathic doctors (NDs) focus on supporting the body’s inherent self-healing processes and addressing the root causes of illness. Key differences include:
Education and training
NDs complete a four-year graduate-level program at accredited naturopathic medical schools, similar to MDs and DOs. However, ND programs include additional training in natural therapies, such as botanical medicine, clinical nutrition, and homeopathy.
Treatment philosophy
Naturopathic doctors prioritize natural, minimally invasive therapies and follow a Therapeutic Order that emphasizes removing obstacles to health and stimulating self-healing mechanisms. In contrast, MDs tend to focus more on symptom management and may rely on pharmaceutical interventions.
Diagnostic approach
While all three types of doctors can order diagnostic tests and perform physical examinations, NDs often spend more time identifying underlying causes of illness and developing personalized treatment plans.
Scope of practice
NDs can serve as primary care providers in some states, but their ability to prescribe medications and perform certain procedures may be more limited compared to MDs and DOs, depending on state regulations. According to Oregon.gov, Oregon naturopathic physicians may prescribe medication, perform minor surgery, practice natural childbirth, and administer injection therapies.
Fun fact: Oregon was the first state in the nation to establish a “Board of Naturopathic Examiners,” which enabled it to have the power to license and regulate the practice of naturopathic medicine. Currently, There are 1200 active licensees in the state.
