My daughter used to get sick every December, like clockwork.  I’d pick her up from school – kids were coughing all around her.  I knew it was only a matter of time until she started coughing, too.

When she did get sick, I would take her to our pediatrician, who would recommend lots of fluids, steamy showers, cough syrups and tylenol for fevers.

One year I decided to do something different.  I took my daughter to a naturopath, who recommended warming socks at night.  We were impressed with how they appeared to reduce sick time and speed recovery.  I hope they help your family as much as they have helped mine!

Warming Socks

This centuries-old hydrotherapy technique originated in Europe.  When cold, wet socks are applied to warm feet, it triggers an increase in blood circulation. This boost in circulation not only helps to clear congestion in the head and chest but also stimulates the immune system to fight off infections.

You’ll need:

  1. A pair of thin cotton socks
  2. A pair of thick wool socks
  3. A bowl of ice water

The process:

  1. Warm your feet in a bath of warm water – be careful not to burn yourself with hot water.
  2. Soak the cotton socks in ice water and wring them out thoroughly while your feet are soaking in warm water.
  3. Put on the wet cotton socks, followed immediately by the dry wool socks.
  4. Go to bed, keeping your feet covered and warm

Warming socks are known for helping:

  • Common colds and flu
  • Sore throats and ear infections
  • Headaches and migraines
  • Upper respiratory infections
  • Nasal congestion and sinus infections

For best results, start this treatment at the first sign of illness and repeat for three consecutive nights.

Remember, while the warming sock treatment can be a valuable addition to your home care routine, it’s always best to consult with a healthcare professional, especially if you have underlying health conditions – please keep your doctor in the loop.
